Behind the Scenes: How Old Kentucky Chocolates Handcrafts Sweet Memories

May 4, 2026

A box of Old Kentucky Chocolates brings a smile to everyone’s face. That's exactly why Don and Pam Hurt founded Old Kentucky Chocolates right here in Lexington, Kentucky, in 1964. More than 60 years later, our family is still creating your beloved gourmet chocolates.

What started with Bourbon Chocolates, Bourbon Cherries, and Old Fashioned Pulled Creams has grown into an entire collection of small-batch, handcrafted chocolates — truffles, Fleur de Sel sea salt caramels, chocolate-covered strawberries, and so much more. But our mission has never changed: bring you the best.

Every caramel is handcrafted in copper kettles. Every piece is enrobed in high-quality chocolate that has been perfectly tempered. Small batches mean every box that leaves our Lexington kitchen meets the same standard it did in 1964.

It also means the family members leading Old Kentucky Chocolates today, grew up with admiration and respect for the craft. Julia, Bill, Will, and Katie — the next generation of the Hurt family — are leading the five Lexington locations with a dedication to their loyal customers and are committed to continuing to bring joy to Lexington locals and travelers alike. This isn't just a business. It's home.

Whether you're searching for the perfect gift or treating yourself to something worth savoring, this is chocolate made with high-quality ingredients, true craftsmanship, and genuine Kentucky roots.

Some details guests notice the moment they sit down — a chocolate-covered caramel at each place setting, a Gift Tower filled with velvety truffles, or a take-home box of handcrafted chocolates that taste like Kentucky. Old Kentucky Chocolates has been crafting small-batch, custom chocolate gifts in Kentucky since 1964. Our favors work beautifully as table décor, place card holders, or gift bags that guests actually look forward to taking home. For dessert displays, our Gift Towers bring together assorted chocolates, truffles, and caramels in a presentation that is both stunning and delicious. Our bourbon cherries — plump maraschinos aged in Kentucky bourbon, then enrobed in rich dark chocolate — make a distinctly Kentucky addition to any celebration. For a classic touch, our chocolate-covered strawberries are a guest favorite at every table. Wedding planners, corporate event coordinators, and hosts throughout Central Kentucky trust us to bring a handcrafted touch to their most important occasions — from intimate baby showers to large-scale milestone celebrations. We’re happy to work with you on quantities, assortments, and packaging that fit your vision. When the details matter most, let the chocolate speak for itself.

Old Kentucky Chocolates has been a sweet part of Lexington since 1964. Our story began when Don and Pam Hurt shifted from running a bakery to following their passion for chocolate. A common question we get here at OKC is how one should properly store chocolate in order to keep it fresh. There's a little bit more to it than just putting it in the fridge to chill.
